Mr. John Greenler, from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center visited College of Menominee Nation December 1, 2011. Greenler came to provide internship opportunity information and encouraged CMN students to apply. “We are looking for students from a diversity of areas and a diversity of backgrounds,” said Greenler, “Research intertwined with education is a real fundamental opportunity.”
The program consists of a ten-week stay on UW-Madison’s campus with other student researchers and includes a $5,250 stipend. The unique set-up gives undergraduates connections with mentors and scientists working in the field. “Students have the opportunity to meet other students from all over the world,” expressed Greenler, “I don’t think there are any other programs out there with this overarching structure.”
The internship opportunity provides critical research experiences for undergraduates. “The students represent the future scientists,” said Greenler, “It’s really important to have students involved in contemporary science.” Greenler also stressed the importance of sustainability in research projects and noted that sustainability grounds many projects. “The sustainability piece really under-pins the projects we do. In some cases it’s the primary focus,” noted Greenler. He also explained how important scientific research is to finding more economical and streamline ways to manage and use energy. “If we can’t be more efficient, we’ll never be able to be more sustainable.”
Greenler mentioned that there are over 9 sources of funding and although the deadline to apply is February 15, 2012, he encouraged students to apply early.
